Being a small business owner means you will undoubtedly be wearing many hats day to day.
Your tasks vary from website maintenance and customer service, to accounting and even marketing. With so many things on your plate, having the right tools to help you balance and manage your tasks will save you loads of time and energy at the end of the day and help you focus on the bigger picture of your business.
Productivity and Teamwork Tools
Everything you could possibly need to know can be found on Google. But that’s not all the search engine is good for! Every Google email account comes with Google Drive, which houses a wide variety of tools. From Docs to Spreadsheets, Forms and Presentations, you can keep all of your thoughts, ideas and information in one place. The added bonus is that the Drive makes it easy for teams to work together. You can easily share, collaborate and edit each other’s documents simultaneously, making it easier than sending emails back and forth.
Asana or Teamwork
These productivity tools are perfect for getting that mental to-do list out of your head and into a well organized space. Asana and Teamwork are task management platforms that work as digital to-do lists. You can organize tasks, projects and workflow by assigning them to different team members and providing due dates and notes. These tools come in handy if your small business has multiple team members and each with their own set of tasks to handle, like a retail shop, for example.
Social Media and Marketing
While you may have to take on many roles as a small business owner, in-house artist doesn’t have to be one of them. Canva is a tool that turns anyone into graphic designer by providing an easy-to-use platform for creating online graphics. Simply use one of their pre-made templates to customize your own social media post, presentation, flyer, website banner and much more. They also have an app which makes it convenient to create something timely, like an Instagram post, in a pinch.
When 86% of consumers want to receive promotional emails from businesses, email marketing continues to prove its importance for small business owners. Free tools like Mailchimp allow users to easily create newsletters and promotional emails with their templates, guides and more. Mailchimp also gives you the ability to create sign-ups that integrate with your website, lists to keep track of the emails you’ve collected, and even provides statistics on click and open rates.
Buffer or Sprout Social
Scheduling your social media posts ahead of time is a lifesaver. It’s something you won’t even realize saves you so much time and energy until you start doing it, and then you’ll wonder why you waited so long to try it out. Platforms like Buffer or Sprout Social help plan out their social media content and schedule it for a later date, and offer both free and paid plans for individuals and teams.
Here’s where Google comes in handy again. Another tool that every Google account is equipped with is Google Analytics. Analytics is used to track your website’s traffic and visitor stats so you know when, why and how often people are visiting your site. All you have to do is link your website to your Analytics account and let Google do all the hard work.
Yoast Plugin for WordPress
While this is a tool specifically for business owners using a WordPress website, it’s a necessary one — and quite possibly our all-time favorite plugin! The Yoast plugin helps improve your website’s SEO by giving optimization suggestions, like choosing a focus keyword and adding internal links. Boosting your website’s SEO is a long process, but this plugin makes it easy to get started.
